Our perception and understanding of people and place occurs through many media- maps, data, history, drawings- these can be distilled, quantifiable and accurate, but rarely emotive or engaging. It is however, our naturally intuitive and visual approach to documenting the world that is often forgotten when considering a subject; the experience of the first-person is how we see, learn and grow but it is rarely how we try and convey our understanding of people and place.

Notable photographers such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Edward Burtynsky have succeeded in conveying a perception of the world, simple and honest pictures that afford the viewer a comparatively unbiased but powerful image of people and place, the nature of these depictions has inspired us to lay bare our experience of Macao in the hope that it will stimulate a greater depth of understanding.

Contained within this photo essay is my first-person experience of Macao, scenes of multiplicity, phenomenology and honesty. These images do not represent common thought or 'fact'. They are not maps or statistics- they are a tool for considering the observe.
