Writing & Research
Writing and research form an important part of the process, providing a space to develop ideas that emerge through architectural practice, making and observation.
The research explores the relationship between people, designed environments and the materials that shape everyday experience. Particular interests include architecture as a learning environment, materiality, landscape and ecology, play, water and climate.
Writing is used as both a means of communication and a method of thinking: a way to test ideas, make connections and develop questions that may later inform design projects.
Current Research Interests
Architecture as a Learning Environment
How can architecture move beyond being a container for learning and become an active participant in the learning process?
Play, Ecology & Climate
How might playful and experiential environments help people develop an understanding of changing ecological and climatic conditions?
Water as Environmental Teacher
How can water, particularly within Mediterranean and alpine contexts, become a medium through which people experience and understand climate?
Material & Making
How does physical engagement with materials influence design thinking, learning and the development of knowledge?
Selected Writing
Architecture as Teacher
An exploration of architecture as an active pedagogical environment.
Material as Knowledge
An investigation into what making and material experimentation can reveal that cannot be understood through representation alone.
Learning Through Making
Reflections on physical experimentation, craft and design education.
Water, Place & Climate
Early thoughts on the relationship between water, landscape and environmental learning.
